What is Ascension:

Ascension indicates the act of ascending or climbing to a higher place. On the other hand, the word ascension is also used to indicate the elevation of a supreme dignityfor example, the accession to the throne.

The term ascension derives from the Latin rise, which means ‘go up’. Among the synonyms that can be used with respect to this word are ascent, rise or elevation.

In Christianity, the word ascension refers to the moment in which Jesus of Nazarethson of God, ascends to heaven forty days after his resurrection and sits at the right hand of God the Father.

Likewise, it symbolizes the fact that the word of God was embodied by Jesus and glorified after his ascension to heaven.

This event is mentioned in several verses of the Bible in the New Testament, in which it is narrated that Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives, where the ascension took place.

It is also related that, at the time of the ascension, an angel appeared from heaven telling the apostles that Jesus would return in the same way that he ascended.

In the Bibleseveral passages narrate that, before the Ascension of Jesus, he promised his disciples that they would receive the Holy Spirit, asked them to teach the gospel and, finally, blessed them during his ascent.

Among the New Testament verses that describe the ascension of Jesus are Mark 16:19-20, Luke 24:50-53, and Acts 1:9-12.

The Ascension of Jesus

For Christianity, the day of the Ascension of Jesus represents a solemn celebration of his glorification, which takes place forty days after Easter Sunday. For this reason, the liturgical calendar establishes a date for said celebration, which varies from year to year, just like the date of Holy Week.

It should be noted that it should be written with a capital initial every time the Ascension of Jesus is mentioned as a solemn fact of Christianity.

The Ascension of Jesus symbolizes the celestial and glorious return of the son of God, after having fulfilled his duty on Earth with men.

Therefore, it represents the exaltation of Jesus and the possibility that men who believe in his word can ascend to heaven after his death.
