It is difficult to predict the characteristics that sixth generation computers may have, given that it is a technology yet to come, whose path can barely be intuited. However, it is likely that these computers can:

  • Process gigantic amounts of information quickly and similar to how human brains do it.
  • Understand natural language in its interaction with the user, recognizing their voice and responding accordingly with a simulated voice.

The generations of computers that have existed or exist are:

  • First generation of computers (1940-1956). It emerged during the Second World War, following advances in computing devices. These first machines were sophisticated calculating devices equipped with vacuum valves that were programmed before they could execute their functions. In addition, they were very bulky, being able to occupy an entire room and weigh several tons, such is the case of the ENIAC (1946), the UNIVAC I (1951) or the Zuse Z22 (1955).
  • Second generation of computers (1956-1964). It arose when vacuum tubes were replaced by transistors, allowing these new devices to consume less electricity and take up less space. These computers understood the programming language and used perforated paper tapes as a method of memory and communication with the user, such is the case of the RAMAC (1956), the Mainframe IBM 1401 (1959) or PDP-1 (1962).
  • Third generation of computers (1964-1971). It emerged with the appearance of integrated circuits, made with silicon chips. Miniaturized elements could be installed in these components and thus obtain a chip. This allowed much less expensive computers to be manufactured, which began the commercial sale of computers, such as the IBM S/360 series (1964).
  • Fourth generation of computers (1971-1983). It emerged with the appearance of the microprocessor, which allowed the invention of microcomputers. These computers were so small and cheap that they began to be mass marketed. The PC (in English Personal Computer“personal computer”) began to be a work and personal necessity from this generation, led by Intel microprocessor technology, from IBM, and by its competition, Macintosh.
  • Fifth generation of computers (1983-present). It began around 1983 in Japan, with advances in miniaturization and data processing, at the service of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence. It is a technology still in development, which has barely seen its first steps and applications.
