What is civic and ethical training?
When we talk about civic and ethical training or civic and citizen education, we refer to the subjects, courses and educational processes that aspire to build a socially responsible citizen that is, a person who knows how to behave in a harmonious and productive way in society. It consists of the application of civic ethics, a specific branch of philosophy, to the training process of individuals.
To live in a society, we must adapt our behavior to certain patterns and values that allow coexistence, while guaranteeing freedom. This means that in order to be free in a society and decide our own actions, we must have moral autonomy, that is, an ability to evaluate our actions and decisions in light of the law, but also the well-being of the community and responsibility. that we have in front of her.
Thus, civic and ethical training combines knowledge of laws, regulations and rights that contemplates the social pact that we have signed with our peers, with the ethical and moral values that guide society and that we seek to emphasize in all citizens, such as justice, responsibility, solidarity, etc. Thus, among the aspects contemplated by ethical and citizen training are:
- The ability to make conscious decisions in an ethical way.
- Respect for the life projects of others and for shared spaces.
- The defense of the environment and responsibility for future generations.
- Responsibility before the law and authority, as well as the defense of one's own rights.
- The feeling of belonging to an organized human group.
This is why civic and ethical training is included in the vast majority of basic and university study plans, since it is the main tool that society has at its disposal to produce citizens in accordance with the community model that it seeks to found and perpetuate.
